MINUJUSTH
United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti

Closure of MINUJUSTH

The United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) completed its mandate on 15 October 2019, concluding 15 years of UN peacekeeping in Haiti. The United Nations family continues to support Haiti through the United Nations agencies, funds, and programmes in the country, and through the Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH).

Human Rights

The MINUJUSTH human rights activities focus on three areas of work:

  1. Improved compliance of the State with human rights mechanisms;
  2. Improved capacity of the national human rights institution (Office for the Protection of Citizens - OPC);
  3. Improved capacity of civil society organizations to ensure better promotion and protection of human rights in Haiti. MINUJUSTH will partner with a local “watch dog” NGO to support monitoring, promotion and protection of human rights in critical areas.

During the next two years, MINUJUSTH will provide the OPC with the support it requires to consolidate its position as an oversight institution playing an effective oversight role, guided by the Constitution, allowing MINUJUSTH support functions to national and local institutions, to diminish over time.
