On 9 September 2025, the Government of Ethiopia, the African Union, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Global Green Growth Institute, with support from UNOAU, convened a high-level side event on the theme “Solutions for Climate, Mobility, Peace and Security Nexus.”
The event was opened by Commissioner Bankole Adeoye, who described the impact of climate change in Africa as a threat multiplier. In his opening statement, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga underscored the importance of finalizing the Common African Position on Climate, Peace and Security (CAP-CPS) and considering the outcomes of CCDAXII, particularly on integrating CPS into global stocktake and climate financing mechanisms.
Other speakers included Mr. Issifi Boureima, Executive Secretary of the Sahel Commission; Mr. Mohammed Abdiker Mohamud, IOM Chief of Staff; Mr. Evans Njewa, Chairperson of the Least Developed Countries on Climate Change; and Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, Somali Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to establish a CPS continental technical working group and integrate CPS into climate finance and UNFCCC analytical tools. The session also generated key recommendations to inform the Addis Ababa Declaration.
